Using Disk Defragmenter

Defragment WindowsDisk Defragmenter is another tool included with Microsoft Windows. As files are written to and removed from your hard drive things start to get cluttered and thrown out of place. This is not something we actually see on the desktop or in our files but rather the physical location of those "1’s and 0’s" on the hard drive itself. Defragmenting your hard drive regularly ensures your computer can read and write data quickly as possible. You may even notice your computer and programs start up faster! You will not hurt your computer by running this tool.

To run Disk Defragmenter

  • Click on your start menu and go to "All Programs"
  • Navigate to the "Accessories" folder
  • Then to the "System Tools" folder
  • Single left click on "Disk Defragmenter" icon
  • Click "Defragment" and wait for the task to complete
  • Once complete you can close out of the Disk Defragmenter tool.

I recommend running the Disk Defragmenter tool at least monthly.
