How to Setup Windows For Better Gaming
By Mike Man

Windows is an excellent environment for gaming. The flexibility of a PC offers so many ways to play games that consoles just cannot match. The only problem with a PC is with regular use your system will overtime become sluggish making the games you play run not as well as they first did. Here are some tips to get your Windows PC running up to speed.

Choose the Right Driver

Too many people make sure they have the latest driver from their hardware vendor. When doing so you risk using software that may conflict with your favorite game. It is best to go to the vendor’s site and see what they recommend for that particular game. Also do a Google search and find out what other people are suggesting. Why do the work when someone else has done it for you.

Remove Start up Items

The more programs you have running in the background the less resources your game has to use to run as smooth as possible. Go to the start menu then select run. In the run dialog box type “msconfig”. Select the Startup tab. In this tab uncheck the items that you know you don’t need to startup every time you boot your computer. Once done click on OK and restart your computer. If you have an undesired result just go back to run command in the start menu and type “msconfig”. In the startup tab put a check mark back on the program that is having problems.

Clean up the Junk

Make sure that you only have the programs that you will use installed on your computer. Remove the unwanted programs through Add/Remove programs.

Defragment

Sounds pretty basic huh? Well the faster your game can access the data it needs the better the game will perform.

Check the Network

If you are playing a network based game like World of Warcraft. Make sure you are using the fastest connection possible. If you are on a wireless network, consider a wired network. Also make sure that other computers in the home are not running network intensive applications as you are all sharing the same connection.

All of this is really simple and there is a whole lot more you can do. These are a few simple ways to make your gaming that much better.

Just Some Common Computer Problems

by Rex Simpleton

In some of the cases, a XP installed computer may become slow in its working. Largely, it is considered as a software issue in most of the cases. The computers users are made aware and most of them know that addition of more memory into the computer may add up to the speed of the computer which is a considerable fact in most of these cases. Sometimes, it is just considered as a bad command name or improper path.

Some of the files which are missing or get corrupted are not good for the computer and could make the XP windows slow in their working.

First off, the Windows XP registry is basically a database of settings and instructions for everything in your computer: hardware, software, operating system, and even the preferences of the user of the computer. If you have multiple users on a PC, and they each login differently, then these types of preferences, or settings, are stored in the registry.

Also, any time you make a change to any of your computers settings, through the control panel, they are stored and updated in the registry. So, how does the registry get messed up?

The concerning questing which one may come up with is that what makes the registry messed up? The thing is that whenever a new program is installed in the computer by the user, the registry files are made to work simultaneously with the new program installed by the user in the computer. Normally, the newly installed program runs correctly and smoothly. But one does not get to know about it as it is of no concern to the work of the user.

But when the time comes to open the original program, and the required registry file is not there, or is different, the computer might just sit there. It has no idea what to do. It does not think for itself. These problems happen every day to people, even to me. And, this type of problem causes a slow Windows XP computer.

In such events like slowing down or hanging of the computer, just the registry files are to be checked and maintained error free. The registry files are always involved in such cases. It is always recommended to check and fix the registry files through the registry repair software to maintain the speed of the computer. I just checked my registry files and found more than 36 errors in the files. There may be up to 500 errors and more in a computer whose registry files are not fixed. Fixing these errors greatly increase the speed of the computer. It is lot more convenient than getting additional memory space for the computer.

A computer with a very slow startup and working could be maintained with a sample tip. It is needed to run the registry repair software to check for errors in the registry files of the windows. After this, the XP windows computer would have an enhanced speed.

Xbox 360 to Compete More Directly with Nintendo Wii

by Jason Hartson

Nintendo Wii has lead the gaming wars recently, largely due to its motion controllers which give players a more inactive playing experience. It looks like Xbox 360 wants to get rid of this Nintendo advantage by providing their own motion controller.

Along with the recent rumor of a price reduction for the Arcade, this news of the motion controller, really gives the Xbox 360 an opportunity to compete more equally with the Nintendo Wii.

It looks like this also means that Microsoft is going to make more family-friendly games? I hope this is true because I am a big fan of the Xbox 360 but would like some more games for you young kids.

The bundle will also come with some mini-games for the motion controller developed by Rare.

When can we expect the new Xbox 360 Arcade bundle?

Rumor has it that these will be sitting on store shelves for the holiday season. If you’ve been trying to decide between the Nintendo Wii and the Xbox 360, this may be the tipping point.

by Richard West

Today, just about everyone owns a red beam laser pointer. Whether it has been used at work in conjunction with a PowerPoint presentation or to amuse yourself by teasing your cat or dog or, better yet, used to plant a red dot on your friend’s forehead, red beam lasers have been around for a while and contributed to many fun moments in the lives of otherwise sober techno-geeks and non-geeks as well.

But now the novelty of red-beamed laser pointers has worn off. They’re nothing new to see, and almost everyone has one. It’s a good chance that even your grandma, who has no idea what PowerPoint even is, has one. If you want to get the best technological toy out there, you’ve got to move to the next level.

Now, take a look at the new green laser pointers. And I’m not talking about that other kind of “green” where everyone is recycling their old newspapers. I’m talking about a cool new laser pointer that uses the far more powerful 532 nm wavelength; which, as any geek worth “his or her salt” knows, is tons better than the old 650 nm wavelength used by the red laser point. And, best of all, all that extra wavelength means it’s really truly green.

So if you got your kicks by using your old red laser beam to highlight things on a projection screen across the room, imagine how good you’ll feel using a green laser pointer to highlight things that used to be out of reach. Because a green laser beam is more powerful than a red one, it can highlight clouds, low-flying aircraft, and even star constellations. Best of all, you can see the green laser beam outside during full sunlight.

In fact, if you use this laser outside and happen to point it at an airplane, it’s so powerful you could find yourself in a bit of trouble with the government because pointing a sighting device at a plane could get the feds investigating what other reasons you might have for pointing a powerful laser beam at planes. Can your old little red laser beam get you in that kind of trouble?

And the green laser pointer doesn’t produce just a wee little spot. You can see the whole beam as it travels to the stars. Think Luke and his light saber. See the possibilities?

A green laser pointer is at a whole separate plane from the old-style red laser pointer. For a true green, a pointer needs a green direct injection laser diode. These diodes could be potentially dangerous if handled by the public at large, so they’re not even available wholesale. So this complicated process follows to keep hazardous material out of peoples’ hands. (And only the geeks in the room will understand a word of it.)

The green laser pointers you can buy on the market now are all using the very impressively named Diode Pumped Solid State Frequency Doubled technology, which gets shortened to DPSSFD, which is good for everyone. What this means is that an infrared laser diode pumps out 808 nm which is then altered to 1,064 nm which is then shot into a crystal that doubles the frequency to produce the green beam at 532 nm. (With frequency, smaller numbers mean stronger, but you knew that right? Only a geek actually read this paragraph.)

For all these reasons, green laser pointers are the cool new technological gadget that all your techie friends will love. They were actually created in 2000, but outside highly technical fields they’re still virtually unknown. Be prepared to pay a heftier price, though. Red pointers cost less than $10, but a new green laser pointer can be as much as $50. But it will be worth every penny. How could you resist such a powerful new device? We know you want one.

It can be said that there is just about the same number of spyware and anti-spyware software programs out on the market and on the Internet. And because of that, most people will find it rather hard to find or decide on a program to download.

CompMaui recommends Spybot Search and Destroy.

Where To Get Free Spyware Protection

by Salvador Paez

It can be said that there is just about the same number of spyware and anti-spyware software programs out on the market and on the Internet. And because of that, most people will find it rather hard to find or decide on a program to download.

There are also anti-spyware programs that claim to be free, but they just trick the user into installing a worthless program with spyware. Finding the right software can be a tedious task sometimes.

Some anti-virus packages also remove spyware, which makes your job easier. However, some of them don’t, so you still have to install a separate anti-spyware program. Today, there are probably as many spyware and anti-spyware programs on the Internet. If your computer has spyware, you need to download an anti-spyware immediately. Having said that, don’t download the first anti-spyware you see online. There are many free downloadable anti-spyware programs on the Web that are actually spyware programs themselves.

There are many websites that review different types of computer programs. These sites are the first place you should look. Not all of these websites are trustworthy, however, and you will have to use your better judgment before downloading any of the programs there.

Another option is to purchase anti-spyware programs online. Several websites review computer programs, including spyware. Visit these websites to know which anti-spyware programs are the best. It’s advisable to visit only the sites that appear at the top of the list when you do a search. Sites that are less frequently visited may have malicious programs.

Never download free spyware programs from pop-up advertisements. There is a great possibility that the program being offered is one that also contains spyware.

Finally, look for anti-spyware programs that have frequent updates. Updates are necessary because hundreds of new spyware programs are made every day.

There’s a term used by product manufacturers and retailers called “planned obsolescence”. What this is in a nutshell is the understanding that creating products that last isn’t smart from a business standpoint, and this is the concept that drives modern commercialism.

Yet to convince people to buy their products there has to be some assurance and quality and longevity, so while consumers arguably make products that are as good as they’ve ever been quality wise, it’s the concept and marketing behind those products that leaves their shelf life limited.

Video games are just one example. The technology has developed so rapidly that playing on old games on old hardware makes you feel, well old. You feel like you’re missing the next great thing. But aside from the technology, the concept itself behind gaming has changed. Gaming used to be centered around high scores, games that often had no end, or at least no realistically achieved end, therefore allowing players almost limitless amounts of playtime as they endlessly sought to beat their record score.

Game developers quickly realized that this business model was not sound. If they already had a great game that they still had reason to play, it would limit their desire to buy new games. So games began being made with a definite beginning and end. Games also became easier so that end would be more easily and quickly achieved. Once you’ve beaten the game, there’s little else to do. Even if the game is great and would be enjoyable to play through again, there isn’t much incentive to do so without anything driving you on, like a high score to beat. Through this simple switch in business model, games went from having potentially limitless life spans to having less than 20 hours of playtime in them in most cases.

Cell phones are an obvious choice to consider as well, also from a design standpoint, but also from a marketing standpoint. The technology is also there like it is with videogames, constantly improving reception quality, image taking capability, size, etc. As insignificant as some of these things may seem, the advertising and to a lesser extent the pressure that is put on us from others and from ourselves drives us to buy these new products even when the old ones still work fine. If you don’t have the thinnest, slimmest and hippest phones with all the latest gadgets, you’re just not cool, and the advertising lets us know this, or at least, makes us think this.

Some manufacturers take the real easy route, and that is by building things of exceedingly poor quality so that they quickly become unusable. This saves costs on manufacturing and also ensures that that customer will be back on the market for a similar item in the future, though why they would buy it from that same manufacturer is unknown. This strategy doesn’t seem to make much sense from a company’s standpoint, but this is the way of some companies regardless.

Not only is this throw-away society hurting our wallets (with the average household in America now $8,000-$9,000 in debt, it’s also been hurting our environment. To reduce debt check into low interest cards and cut your costs. The manufacturing of these often unnecessary goods throw tons of pollution into the air, while the still fully functioning old products are tossed into the gargantuan landfills of valuable space.

Combating this “planned obsolescence” may be difficult depending on your personality. If you’re a person who values quality and durability over style, you’re probably already doing well to fight this consumerism. If you’re the opposite, it may take a concerted effort on your part to realize how you’re being sucked into buying things you don’t need. Don’t worry about what other people have, let them fall victim to the siren song of ego stroking that new brings them, just worry about your own affairs and what you need to get buy. You’ll be doing yourself and the environment a favor.
