Well in my experience, a good host is the difference between a 30% bounce rate and an 80% bounce rate!

How It Happened

I first noticed this when our AdSense income and site registration rates started to drop for no apparent reason. I checked our traffic figures and the number of new daily visitors was the same. It looked as if people just lost interest in RecognizedExpert.com

6 Seconds of Nothing!
It wasn’t until I saw our servers load average that I noticed what was going on. (Ok, that was a bit technical … Server load average shows how many processes are active for a given time span. A number less than 1 is tolerable. Ours was averaging 18!) Basically the hosted server we were using was so overloaded that our average page response time went from 2.2 seconds (still way slow) to 6 seconds overnight. (OMG!!) It was taking six seconds for the server to begin sending our site to a visitor when they tried to load it. And yes, our users were staring at a white screen the whole time.

Well, what does the average web surfer do when they have to wait more than 3 seconds? *Click* They’re gone! We had the same number of new visitors each day, but now instead of 30% of them leaving immediately, nearly 80% of them were leaving before they saw our site!

If a user can’t view your content, it’s impossible to build a relationship and convert them to customers.

(By the way, Flash can now play MP4 (MPEG4) videos as if they were FLV files.  The quality is awesome and the new player takes advantage of video devices that support hardware acceleration.  Yep, stream HD content to the desktop if you like…)

I use QuickTime Pro 7.5.5 as my compression tool, but I’m sure you can find similar settings in other programs that work with the MPEG4 codec.

1) Open your video in QuickTime

2) Go to “File -> Export”

3) Choose “Movie to MPEG4″

4) Click “Options”

5) Modify your settings as they are in the graphic below:

How to set QuickTime Streaming MP4 For Flash 9+

• File Format: MP4
• Video Format: H.264 (Yes, Flash 9.0.124.0 and above, just download 10 already, support the H.264 codec!)
• Data Rate: 220 kbits/sec (for mixed video and screen recording content)
• Optimized for: Streaming
• Image Size: 640 . 480 VGA
• Frame Rate: 10 (this worked best for me)
• Key Frame: Every: 75 frames

6) Click OK and then Encode

You can pull the file you create into any Flash 9.0.124.0 project the same way you would a .fla file.  The File extension doesn’t even matter, Flash only cares about the content in the file, not its extension.  If you hard coded your player to only view .flv files simply rename your .mp4 file to .flv and it should work flawlessly!

How to Setup Windows For Better Gaming

Windows is an excellent environment for gaming. The flexibility of a PC offers so many ways to play games that consoles just cannot match. The only problem with a PC is with regular use your system will overtime become sluggish making the games you play run not as well as they first did. Here are some tips to get your Windows PC running up to speed.

Choose the Right Driver

Too many people make sure they have the latest driver from their hardware vendor. When doing so you risk using software that may conflict with your favorite game. It is best to go to the vendor’s site and see what they recommend for that particular game. Also do a Google search and find out what other people are suggesting. Why do the work when someone else has done it for you.

Remove Start up Items

The more programs you have running in the background the less resources your game has to use to run as smooth as possible. Go to the start menu then select run. In the run dialog box type “msconfig”. Select the Startup tab. In this tab uncheck the items that you know you don’t need to startup every time you boot your computer. Once done click on OK and restart your computer. If you have an undesired result just go back to run command in the start menu and type “msconfig”. In the startup tab put a check mark back on the program that is having problems.

Clean up the Junk

Make sure that you only have the programs that you will use installed on your computer. Remove the unwanted programs through Add/Remove programs.

Defragment

Sounds pretty basic huh? Well the faster your game can access the data it needs the better the game will perform.

Check the Network

If you are playing a network based game like World of Warcraft. Make sure you are using the fastest connection possible. If you are on a wireless network, consider a wired network. Also make sure that other computers in the home are not running network intensive applications as you are all sharing the same connection.

Fixing these errors greatly increase the speed of the computer. It is lot more convenient than getting additional memory space for the computer.

A computer with a very slow startup and working could be maintained with a sample tip. It is needed to run the registry repair software to check for errors in the registry files of the windows. After this, the XP windows computer would have an enhanced speed.
