Google Android ADP 1.5 on US T-Mobile G1

G1 Andriod

G1 Andriod

Just updated my already rooted Google Android G1 (US T-Mobile) from the TMobile Jesusfreke 1.4(.something) firmware to the ADP 1.5 Jesusfreke firmware with great success! (If you haven’t yet, ROOT YOUR G1)

Because my phone was already rooted I used the JF Updater (from the App Market) to save time.

The udpate.zip download was pretty quick over 3G (as I’m in Las Vegas now… and by the way, the WiFi tether app saved me $12 a day in “hotel Internet fees” and with 3G it is plenty fast enough to watch Hulu shows or even upload pics from the trip.  I even downloaded a 1.1 GB file without error while tethered wirelessly to my G1 from my laptop.)

There were a handful of snags during the upgrade though:

  1. First the initial reboot stalled.  I thought I was going to have to restore back to the original TMobile software but fortunately all I had to do was pull the battery and restart.  It crashed a few times after the first boot but it has been running flawlessly sense then. So don’t panic, pull the battery (Reminder: this is post update/flash/install) and restart (possibly a few times.)

  2. Second the superuser enabler app fails.  So I had just finish the update and went to load up the WiFi tether app.  Well, this app needs elevated privileges and for some reason the superuser app was crashing on me.  After reading around a bit, it seems all you need to do to work around this annoyance is to enable USB Debugging Mode. (From the Home Screen click Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Development -> and enable USB Debugging.) Enable that and your problems solved.

All in all the new 1.5 firmware (Cupcake) is really incredible.  It is far more stable, nicer looking, easier to use and navigate, more responsive and faster.

The video recorder is pretty awesome too.  Now we can record video clips and with a few clicks upload them directly to YouTube (or send them in an email or MMS just the same.)

Lastly, the new widgets are killer.  Now I can get the weather directly from the home screen using Rough GPS (Wireless GPS) but that is just one of dozens for you to try out.

Drop me a line if you want help rooting your Android.  You will be glad you did. :)
