OpenSuse 10.3 is very nice also Mandriva 2008 is geared more at Multi Media out of the box and ease of use. I have to think even the worst Linux distribution ( cough - cough Ubuntu ) today is better than Windoze, at least there would still be hope to fix it. ;) There are some other nice distros out there to.
