LogMeIn for Ubuntu

LogMeIn is a fantastic tool for controlling Mac and Windows systems. It’s easy to setup and it’s free (for non commercial use.)

For those of us that have converted to Ubuntu it’s a pain to connect to Windows clients using LogMeIn due to the lack of support for Linux (until now!)

Before:
Wine + FireFox For Windows = Sometimes works
or
VirtualBox + Windows + FireFox = Works, but man… this kind of defeats the purpose here…

Now:
LogMeIn Labs has download links for Linux FireFox clients!

Finally a client native to Linux! The only requirements are that you are running a 32-bit version of FireFox. Thats it!

Enjoy!

Video Playback Crashes In Ubuntu 9.04 – A Simple Fix!

The Problem

Every time I open a video player in Ubuntu 9.04 the video player crashes!  Movie Player, MPlayer, VLC media player, it didn’t matter even the video encoding programs like Avidemux and WinFF would crash out.

By the way, this is all on a Dell Mini 9 Netbook.

The Solution

So here’s how I fixed it.  Ends up when I had my external screen connected I made some pretty funky changes to my X configuration.

Solution: (only tried it with the external monitor disconnected)

1) Open a terminal and type:

   sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

2) Log out, log back in and you’re good to go!

Have fun with Ubuntu!  And if you live on Maui and want a copy just give me a call and I’ll send one your way if I have spare CDs.
