Video Playback Crashes In Ubuntu 9.04 – A Simple Fix!

The Problem

Every time I open a video player in Ubuntu 9.04 the video player crashes!  Movie Player, MPlayer, VLC media player, it didn’t matter even the video encoding programs like Avidemux and WinFF would crash out.

By the way, this is all on a Dell Mini 9 Netbook.

The Solution

So here’s how I fixed it.  Ends up when I had my external screen connected I made some pretty funky changes to my X configuration.

Solution: (only tried it with the external monitor disconnected)

1) Open a terminal and type:

   sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

2) Log out, log back in and you’re good to go!

Have fun with Ubuntu!  And if you live on Maui and want a copy just give me a call and I’ll send one your way if I have spare CDs.

Thanks for this. I have tried stuff found on Ubuntu forums but this was the only thing that worked.

I have the same problem but this could not sort it out..
I wrote the command in terminal and then logged out. But after logging in, the problem was same.

I couldn’t understood ‘how to disconnect the external monitor’

Is it the cause that problem is unsolved?

It didn’t work for me. Is there anything extra to kick things along? Jaunty seems to have a real problem coping with big applications.

I tried this suggestion, after restarting my machine i’ve now got a pixelated, messed up picture and i cant get logged in. When i try and load my pc it gets to the ubuntu logo with the loading bar and it hangs there. Is there anyway of undoing the command above using the root or system restore?

    Thanks

  • Sorry for the confusion. I have comments set to be approved (due to the massive volume of spam) and I don’t usually get to it every day. Rest assured I don’t delete comments though :)

The post is quite specific to a duel screen dell mini9 setup. You may find more detailed information here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=690760 for other setups.

    Best of luck!
